The Hobbit Trailer

The Hobbit – next December. I’ve been trying to contain my excitement, given my disappointment over how the LotR trilogy went, but between the casting (Richard Armitage as Thorin could not be more perfect – Martin Freeman IS Bilbo – Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug just makes me want to shriek with delight, etc etc) and now this trailer …

Well, excitement abounds. No containing it anymore.

SQUEE!

  1. The Lord of the Rings movies are still my favorite Favorite Book book adaptations ever, whatever you say, so I'm already relatively confident on that end… but even if I wasn't… just LOOK, LOOK at that beautiful little man, I swear I instinctively said "OHHHH he's cute" aloud twice while watching– and that was only the ALOUD times– it seriously does NOT MATTER to me what else is happening in the movie, I will just sit and watch Martin Freeman as a hobbit for days on end. This completely seals my fate as someone with an inexplicable Hobbit Fetish. IS THIS A SERIOUS PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDER?! I can't help thinking back to when I first read the Hobbit when I was thirteen… which would have been exactly twenty years ago this Sunday… and how when I first pulled the book out of my stocking and read the description on the back, I thought, "Huh, do I really want to read a book about a stuffy middle-aged man with hairy feet?" …and even though I quickly got sucked in and loved it, I still know that thirteen-year-old girl would have been HORRIFIED, HORRIFIED to know the feelings I have for that hairy-footed man today. I laugh at her horror.

  2. Rockinlibrarian – for the MOST part, Jackson does a phenomenal job with casting. Martin Freeman is absolutely perfect for Bilbo – I mean, you just look at him in that trailer and he IS Bilbo, even Tolkein, one thinks, would have to look at him and say, "Ah yes, there's my creation, brought to life."As for Richard Armitage as Thorin – I can't think of anyone better to capture Thorin's sense of duty and honor, his strict justice with no room for compassion, until the very end. Can't you just HEAR him delivering the line "If more of us valued cheer and food and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world"? I'm melting just thinking about it.Kirsten – One of my most vivid memories from childhood is the first time I read The Hobbit. In our local library, browsing through the shelves, pulling out a hardcover book with a blue and green dustjacket with pictures of hills and streams and roads, opening it up to read, "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit," and getting swept away with Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin and the rest. It is just pure delight.
